Due to the vastness of his learning and his great erudition, Louis de La Vallée Poussin (LVP) is generally considered to be one of the greatest Western scholars of Buddhist studies in the twentieth century. This new series of his Collected Works presents not only the two summae of Buddhist scholasticism — i.e., his voluminous milestone translations (critically annotated by himself) of Vasubandhu’s Abhidharmakośabhāṣya and Xuanzang’s Vijñāptimātratāsiddhi, which the late Hubert Durt called “the masterwork of the northern Hīnayāna Abhidharma school” and “the best compendium of the tenets of the Yogācāra current of Mahāyāna” — but also, the Collected Works assembles together, for the first time and in one place, most of LVP’s other important writings related to Buddhist topics (see below) and makes these landmark writings of Buddhist scholarship available to a wider English speaking world.
This publication of The Collected Works of Louis de La Vallée Poussin also features a general introduction to LVP and his writings by David Seyfort Ruegg as well as specific introductions to the particular volumes, etc. (see below).
