Vaiṣhaka Celebrations of Buddha’s Birth, Enlightenment and Parinirvāṇa
Friday, June 9, from 9am to 12am
Vaiṣhaka Day, also called Wesak, is one of the four main buddhist holidays which commemorates three major events in the life of Śhakyamunī Buddha: his birth, enlightenment, and parinirvāņa. In Tibet, lay persons would traditionally bring gifts of food to offer to the monks and nuns; a feast would follow. The central practice is recitation of The Prostration Offering to the Sthaviras. The sixteen sthaviras, or elders, were the major disciples of the Buddha whom he commanded to protect the teachings. The recitation will be followed by a reading on Buddha Śhakyamunī and the performing of the Buddha Sādhana, ending with a picnic in our Buddha garden (weather allowing).
